On October 24, Britney Spears published her memoir The Woman in Me. The title is a reference to the lyrics of her song "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" (2001), in which she sings "I'm just trying to find the woman in me".
Stories in The Woman in Me
The Woman in Me chronicles Spears' journey to stardom, the public challenges she faced and her efforts to escape the longstanding conservatorship that once controlled her life.
At the beginning of her memoir, Spears writes that her grandmother, Jean, was sent to a refugee camp by Spears' grandfather. Their three-day-old baby had died and Jean was devastated. While at the asylum, Jean was administered lithium; she then shot herself into the child's grave. Spears wrote, "Tragedy happened in my family."
Spears also wrote that she is presumed innocent, even though she smoked regularly from the age of 14 and lost her virginity around the same time. In 2002, ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake texted her and left her on the set of a music video. When she became pregnant by Timberlake, she wrote that he convinced her to have an abortion.
Spears wrote that Timberlake repeatedly cheated on her, writing: "Photographers caught Justin with one of the All Saints girls in a car". After the breakup, her public image suffered, she became exhausted and began abusing the prescription drug Adderall. She also admitted that she cheated on Timberlake with dancer Wade Robson.
She describes her two-week affair with actor Colin Farrell in her memoir. Spears wrote that the reason for her 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander was that she was "drunk and very bored". She wrote that her family was angry after learning about her marriage. "They made it so big just for innocent fun," Spears wrote. Everyone has a different opinion on that issue, but I don't take it very seriously. I think a crappy Vegas wedding is something people can take as a joke." Then my family came and acted like I had started World War III. I cried the rest of my time in Las Vegas.
She met backup dancer Kevin Federline and they had two children together. She suffered from postpartum depression, shaved her head, and used an umbrella to attack a paparazzi's car.
